TOY ADAPTATION

Toys are an important part in the development of a child. Unfortunately, some toys are not built with the idea that children with different abilities will ever play with them. I don’t think that children with disabilities should be denied access to toys. The added cost of buying an adapted toy from a retailer is a barrier.

What is it that I do?

I adapt toys for people with special needs. I have a couple of design goals in mind:

I try to modify the toy so that the warranty will not be voided
I try to adapt the toy so that other family members can still play with it
I try to adapt the toy so that the person can use the toy independently as much as possible
I work with family members or providers who best know the person to come up with the most appropriate adaptationCan be easily used in an inclusive setting

What is a toy?

Perhaps it’s easier to say what I don’t consider to be toys at this point:

Computers and computer accessories
IPods and other media players
Cameras

This is not an all inclusive list so if you have any doubts, please contact me. Also, you can contact me before purchasing a toy if you want to know what can be done to adapt a specific toy.

Who is eligible?

There are no age limits. The person must have a developmental disability as defined by the state of NC. For each person, I will adapt one toy for Christmas or equivalent religious holiday and one toy for a birthday. I can only adapt toys for people living in the Wake, Durham, and Orange counties of North Carolina.

Costs

The adaptations are at no charge other than the cost of the original toy which you will provide.
